「Project Space
“Project Space is a registered charity which provides in-flat maintaining services, architectural design research, community art and environment education.”
During the previous year, since I attend different activities actively, therefore I have introduced Project Space for more than fifty times. This is the seventh year after Project Space has established. Finally it has its own office. Although is it small, it is still something meaningful and memorable.
The Gap between Ideal and Reality
From a part-time Architectural Design programme student, to the establishment of Project Space. I hope to design better architectures, to enable people living in dignity, and enjoy comfortable life – the utopia, the idea keeps hovering. People who study architect always hope to change the world with it. Therefore, when our classmates who study social work suggest to help people with architect, we, a group of architecture students establish Project Space. Yet, an idea is only ideal. Watching what I have design painstakingly becomes nano flats, or not sure if they can only be mainland second-tier city big flats located in ghost towns confused me a lot. Facing scarcity of land in Hong Kong, the idea is just an empty talk.
Introducing the Utopia Idea into Grassroots
On the path with heavy mist leading to unknown, in order to ponder over my future, I have chosen to go to Australia for working holiday. Seeing the locals using natural soil mixed with straw, abandoned glass containers to build houses, homegrown organic vegetables, etc. This kind of autarkic sustainable life is like an utopia. It has lightened my original intention again. To pursue my dream, I set foot on the path again. It’s just that there are many obstacles along the way. Only actively cooperating with different organisations, and make a breakthrough providing services again and again. At last, we have found our position. We aim to help the unprivileged to improve their living environment, including repairing, in order to consummate the crack of existing services.
Finding Solution for Limitation
Time passes, we hear questions gradually. The grassroot families that we serve mostly are living in subdivided units and metal huts. Helping them to improve their living environment seems reasonable. However, this also increases the number of new immigrants and South Asians, even worsen the situation of subdivided units. Yet, facing the fact that the average living floor area of each person keeps descending, and the grassroots cannot save the day instead of accepting it helplessly. What we can do is to improve their living environment, living standard under limited resources and conditions. In addition, we do not care their identities and backgrounds.
Maybe this is too idealise. Still, I remember the original intention of establishing Project Space when I see every child who lives in subdivided units being happy from the deep inside because of having better living environment. I know my mission. We are willing to try although the Utopia idea is faintly discernible, as in a mist.
